Creating a Rain Plan for Your Wedding: A Must-Have for Every Couple
As a wedding photographer based in St. Louis, I’ve seen countless couples on their big day, from sunny skies to unexpected showers. While we can’t control the weather, we can certainly prepare for it. A solid rain plan is essential to ensure that your wedding day remains smooth, beautiful, and stress-free, no matter what Mother Nature has in store.
Here’s my advice for creating a rain plan that allows you to embrace your wedding day, rain or shine.
1. Have a Backup Indoor Venue Ready
One of the most important aspects of a rain plan is securing an indoor backup location. If you’re planning a garden ceremony or an outdoor reception, it’s crucial to have an indoor alternative, even if it’s just for photos or a portion of your ceremony. Speak with your venue about options like moving the ceremony inside or setting up a tent. Make sure the venue has a backup space large enough to accommodate your guest list comfortably.
2. Communicate with Your Vendors
Your vendors will be your biggest support system when the rain starts to fall. As soon as you’re concerned about the weather, get in touch with your planner, photographer, florist, and anyone else involved. Wedding professionals are used to dealing with weather-related hiccups, so trust that they’ll have your best interest in mind and be ready with quick solutions.
For example, a photographer (like me!) will have strategies for capturing beautiful moments indoors or in an alternative space. And florists can ensure their arrangements are protected from the rain, so they’re still picture-perfect.
3. Plan for Photos in the Rain
While no couple wants to think about getting caught in a downpour, some of the most stunning wedding photos are taken in the rain. Think about adding some fun and romantic elements to your rain photo plan, such as clear umbrellas, a beautiful coat, or a statement piece like a colorful rain boot or galoshes.
If the rain is light, we can often get creative and capture some unique moments with natural light, reflections, and wet surfaces that can create dreamy effects.
4. Consider a Tent or Canopy for Outdoor Spaces
If your ceremony or reception is outside, tents are a fantastic option. Many St. Louis venues have outdoor spaces with a tented backup option, which is a great compromise. The tent can protect your guests and décor from the rain, and the space can feel just as magical as an open-air event with a little creativity.
5. Set Up an Umbrella Station
It’s a small touch, but a thoughtful one: set up an umbrella station for your guests to use during a drizzle or downpour. Not only does it show you’re prepared, but it’s a fun way to make sure everyone stays dry while adding a touch of whimsy to your wedding day. Plus, if you’re getting married in St. Louis, it’s nice to have umbrellas on hand for those unpredictable afternoon showers!
6. Work with Your Photographer to Optimize Indoor Shots
In case you need to move indoors, make sure your photographer knows which areas of your venue offer the best lighting and backgrounds for photos. Whether it’s a beautiful staircase, a cozy lounge area, or grand windows, a skilled photographer will be able to create stunning images inside. It’s also helpful to scout these spots ahead of time.
7. Stay Positive and Embrace the Moment
Sometimes, despite all the planning, rain is unavoidable. But it’s important to stay positive and focus on the love and joy of the day. A little rain won’t ruin your celebration—it can even add an extra layer of intimacy and romance to your photos.
Remember: Your wedding day is about more than the weather—it’s about the commitment you’re making to your partner and the people you love. So, no matter what the forecast says, take a deep breath and enjoy every moment!
As a wedding photographer, my goal is always to help couples feel prepared and confident for their big day. Rain or shine, your St. Louis wedding can still be just as beautiful and memorable with the right planning and attitude.
